Abstract

Two x-ray diffraction techniques were employed to study the cumulative fatigue damage in Inconel 718 and in Waspalloy. The use of x-ray diffraction has been shown to be a useful approach in assessing fatigue damage accumulation by virtue of its disclosure of microstructural changes incurred during cyclic deformation. As a result, two methodologies have been employed that, when used together, are uniquely suited for approximating the remaining life even when the prior cyclic history is unknown, and for predicting the potential life under spectrum loading or various environments.
