Abstract
Membrane problems that provide examples for introducing students to the key concepts in the analysis of transient material balances are discussed. Related problems can also be designed for the investigation of gas separation membrane processes and on the behavior of membrane reactors. All these membrane problems are of commercial interest as they provide students with come exposure to new application areas of chemical engineering, and also give the instructor an opportunity to introduce basic concepts of process design at an early stage of the curricula. One such membrane problem that is discussed is the loss of flavor components when passing apple juice through a membrane in order to concentrate it.
