Abstract

The investigation of single mammalian cells by using capillary electrophoresis (CE) is presented. CE allows to analyze single cell samples with volumes ranging from nanoliters to femtoliters. It provides fast and highly efficient separations of diverse analytes. It can also be coupled with various detection techniques to achieve sensitivity necessary for single cell analysis. Separations of proteins in single human colon adenocarcinoma cells have been achieved with CE and laser induced fluorescence (LIF) detection. In addition to injection techniques for the CE analysis of cell composition, sample injection techniques to monitor secretion from an individual mammalian cell with CE have also been developed.
