Abstract

An injection system was mounted on the bale chamber of a rectangular-type baler to inject liquid anhydrous ammonia into baled forage. A high pressure syringe operated with the tractor hydraulic system was used to inject a stream of liquid anhydrous ammonia into the formed bale. This type of ammonia application to high-moisture alfalfa hay (20 to 30% wet basis) reduced storage temperature, increased crude protein and normally improved visual appearance of the hay. When wrapped in plastic, the ammoniated hay had a dry matter loss similar to that of dry hay; otherwise, loss was similar to untreated wet hay.
