Anomalous axial propagation in a gyrotropic, locally uniaxial, dielectric, helicoidally nonhomogeneous medium

Abstract

Anomalous axial propagation - reflecting the characteristics of Voigt waves in crystals - is examined in a gyrotropic, dielectric, helicoidally nonhomogeneous medium with local uniaxiality. A fourth-order ordinary differential equation is derived, from which the conditions for anomalous axial propagation are extracted. Vibration ellipses of axially propagating Voigt waves in the chosen medium precess, a trait not evident in a homogeneous medium.
