Abstract

Goal programming is emerging as a practical tool to solve optimization problems where a number of conflicting goals or objectives are involved. In this paper, goal programming is explained and is applied to the multiple criteria optimization of the single-pass, single-point turning operation. It is pointed out that goal programming may be the most appropriate technique for those manufacturing situations where a single objective is either not practical or not desirable. With this technique the optimal machining conditions can be selected under such conflicting objectives as minimization of cost, achievement of a given metal removal rate and maximization of tool life.
