Abstract

The total artificial heart is a complex system requiring biocompatible materials, an implantable blood pump, a power source and a method of actuation and control. A multidisciplinary group at The Pennsylvania State University has designed, fabricated and evaluated such a system. The blood pumps are pneumatically actuated and contain a smooth segmented polyurethane blood contacting surface. An automatic control system has been developed to balance the output of each ventricle and respond to varying physiological demands. The total artificial heart has been implanted in 27 calves with survival times to 100 days.
