    Abstract

To achieve the full accuracy of tapered roller bearings, we measure alignment, compliance, and error motion during assembly. A roundness tester enables the alignment of reference diameters. An air bearing piston applies an axial load during rotation while an indicator measures displacement. Radial, axial, and face error motions are also measured, with a final correction to minimize twice-per-revolution error motion. For grinding, a 4RT tapered roller bearing spindle produces parts with form and finish approaching those made with air bearings but can carry much high loads.
