Abstract
Intravital microscopy of the cremaster muscle of mice was used to assess the microcirculatory behavior of fluorescein-labeled lipid microbubbles with and without TNFalpha-mediated inflammation. A good relation was found between the ultrasound signal from retained microbubbles and the degree of renal inflammation. It was concluded that noninvasive assessment of tissue inflammation is possible by ultrasound imaging of phagocytosed microbubbles.
