Abstract
This paper discusses the process planning problem with a view to automate its solution methods. The problem is formulated using AI techniques. The basic issues involved in modeling the process planning problem are discussed. A hierarchical planning structure is proposed, in which the highest level is a simplification or abstraction of the plan and the lowest is a detailed plan, sufficient to solve the problem. States in the problem can be modeled using the CAD representation schemes, such as Constructive Solid Geometry and Boundary Representation. The advantages and disadvantages of the schemes is discussed. Operators which correspond physically to material removal are also modeled using the same representation scheme. The design of control strategy is discussed.
