Abstract
In this application report, the use of an automated Smith charting program that can compute maximum gain, maximum stable gain, noise figure, stability factors and more, for two-port circuits, using the properties of the Smith chart, is described. The Smith chart is a graphical tool developed almost 50 years ago to aid in the design of impedance matching networks, the determination of stability, and the analysis of VSWR (voltage standing wave ratio). The chart represents a conformal mapping of the complex plane of normalized impedances onto what is termed the reflection coefficient plane. 5 refs.
