Abstract

This paper illustrates how an axial moment method can be used to provide simple analyses of convective heat and mass transfer problems in circular conduits. The basic procedure is illustrated, and useful results are obtained for four important transport problems. Criteria for radial uniformity are obtained for steady-state tubular reactors and for a capillary column inverse gas chromatography experiment. New results are presented for second and third moments for solute dispersion in a tube, and an approximate solution is obtained for the classic problem of laminar heat transfer in a tube.
