Abstract

Microarray experiments may have batch effects due to samples being collected or processed at different times or by different labs or investigators. Linear mixed models which incorporate the known sources of variation in the experiment can be used as design and analysis tools to assess and minimize the impact of batch effects and to determine the effects of design decisions such as sample pooling or splitting.
