Abstract

Research supports that many neuro-typical and even more intellectually and developmentally disabled and autistic children experience sleep problems, such as sleep onset delays, sleep disruptions, and reduced total hours of sleep. A variety of behavioral interventions exist for addressing these sleep problems. One specific type of intervention, faded bedtime procedures, directly addresses sleep onset delays, late bedtimes, night waking, and early morning awakenings while incorporating age-appropriate sleep expectations and bedtime routines. This chapter describes the processes of constructing faded bedtime with and without response costs using a case example of the use of the intervention and the research support for faded bedtime with and without response cost procedures.
