Abstract

An increase in the use of biodegradable elevator fluids is emerging due to environmental concerns, improved safety features, and reduced friction of these environmentally friendly fluids. The development and the advantages of using an environmentally friendly hydraulic fluid were presented. An elevator hydraulic fluid containing thermally processed soybean oil and selected additives was formulated for use in the Statue of Liberty in 2002. A modification of this fluid was in use at Penn State University. Various elevator fluids were evaluated. All of the elevator hydraulic fluids exhibited acceptable wear values. In general, the coefficient of friction for the vegetable based oils was typically about 8-10% lower than petroleum-based fluids.
