Abstract
Ca2CuO3 and Sr2CuO3 were examined for use as insulators with BiSrCaCuO superconductors. Only Ca2CuO successfully synthesized and sintered; the sintering required a slightly higher temperature than that required for the 85 K phase in the BiSrCaCuO system. Ca2CuO3 and the 85 K BiSrCaCuO phase have nearly equal th can be cofired into monolithic forms. Ca2CuO3 is a highly conductive semiconductor at room temperature. Ca2CuO3 is highly hygroscopic and exposure to moisture can reduce its conductivity by up to three orders of magnitude.
