Abstract
This study investigated the experiences and views of a small sample of Black criminologists. In addition to their general experiences in the field, the research investigated: (1) what aspects of their positions they find most satisfying; (2) do they approve of the direction of the field; (3) what suggestions they have for improving the field; and (4) what do they consider as their most important contribution to the field. Black criminologists in this sample were satisfied with their work duties—but were frustrated by their lack of progression in their careers, the feeling that their contributions weren’t appreciated, and that performance evaluations were not equitable. The respondents also felt that improving the field should require the inclusion of more diverse voices, working with the community more, and placing more of an emphasis on scholar-activism. Most Black criminologists felt that their greatest contribution was influencing the lives of students.
