Abstract
This article examines the importance of early childhood experiences with books as toys and the relationship of book play to reading. Selected bibliographies for infants and toddlers as well as guidelines for introducing books to infants and enhancing infant and toddler development are presented. The infant bibliography is subdivided into books that have visual appeal, books that have listening appeal, books that have simple storylines, books that teach words/concepts, and books that are designed to be manipulated. The toddler bibliography is subdivided into books that teach or feature alphabet concepts, color concepts, number concepts, language development, identification of similarities and contrasts, taking another perspective, socialization concepts, rhymes and songs, storyhour, and books that are designed to be manipulated.
