Abstract
Gas is normally present in the stomach and colon and to a lesser extent within the small bowel. When bowel becomes obstructed, the normal patterns of air within the abdomen become altered. Conventional radiography is a useful and efficient means of evaluating for bowel obstruction. Abdominal radiography also serves as means to triage patients for additional (i.e., fluoroscopic or cross-sectional) imaging.
