Abstract
Many plant traits are reactions to environmental change, for example, yield increase in response to fertilizer application or growth inhibition following the onset of drought. When we compare and select varieties on the basis of a reaction, we are working with just two arbitrary points drawn from an underlying dose-response curve. In this chapter, I will discuss methods to describe and analyze dose-response variation and comment on the implications for plant selection. I will also speculate on the relationship between genetic variation and changes in dose-response behavior.
