Abstract
The effectiveness of conventional strain based damping treatments can be markedly reduced by the presence of significant in-plane tensile loading. Inertial damping approaches, such as tuned mass absorbers, are immune to such loading, but are typically effective over a small frequency range. A distributed inertial damper concept is presented that uses a collection of individual dampers to produce broadband energy dissipation. The effectiveness of the distributed damper is demonstrated using a simply supported beam under tensile load.
