N1 - Funding Information:
At DU, the establishment of new programs brings challenges for the library as we are faced with building a collection in an area of concentration that heretofore did not exist. Although a librarian sits on the Graduate Council to advocate for increased library funding during a new program’s initiation, as is written in the New Program Guidelines, in reality new money for collections in support of new programs is not always forthcoming. Fortunately, to mitigate shortfalls, Penrose Library has the Women’s Library Association (WLA) to provide funding for the enhancement of existing collections or for the establishment of new ones. The WLA, established in 1956 to raise funds and acquire book and archival collections for the University of Denver Libraries, now provides financial support to Penrose Library through book sales, capital campaigns, fund-raising activities, and special events.

N2 - Recent national and world events have placed a renewed emphasis upon the psychological consequences of disaster and terror. Many governmental and non-governmental agencies, as well as universities and other research centers, have responded with training programs to better equip practitioners and service workers to aid victims and survivors of tragic events. The University of Denver recently created a new program in International Disaster Psychology. This paper describes the impetus behind the program, and offers guidelines for developing a collection of materials to support the teaching and research for this area of study. A list of books, organizations, and journals is included.
