T1 - Catalytic cracking of oxidized sulfur compounds in gas oil stream

N2 - A straight gas oil containing 1.5 wt% S where most of the sulfur compounds were oxidized to corresponding sulfoxides/sulfones was catalytically cracked in an inert atmosphere to decompose the sulfones/sulfoxides. Both acidic and basic catalysts were tested at 325o C. At the reaction conditions employed, there was a 51% reduction in the sulfur compounds resulting in a product whose sulfur concentration was 0.68 wt%. At the same time there was no significant cracking of the 3-ring oxidized sulfur compounds. To get a better understanding of the chemistry of sulfur containing compound and its oxidized form, some of the critical parameters of dibenzothiophene and dibenzothiophene sulfone were studied using molecular simulation to provide further insight.
