title = "Ch. 20. Point processes in astronomy: Exciting events in the universe",
abstract = "We present an overview of point processes in astronomy, with emphasis on data and data analysis, and on modeling of temporal and spatial astrophysical phenomena using point processes. Following a brief discussion of the naive point process theory sufficient for most real-world applications, we outline the facts behind the mysterious gamma-ray bursts, and then detail two different point-process aspects of this exciting problem. Brief discussions of five other areas of astronomy where point processes play an important role conclude this article.",
