Abstract
We describe challenge problems for process systems engineering to address uncertainties and business dynamics in an integrated approach to decision-making. Experience with the approach shows the value of a variety process systems methods as well as attention to both the process system and the product. For example, simulations are essential to justify proposed process retrofits and conceptual design targets are important in estimating the maximum possible cost reductions. Investments in product innovation and market development are also vital.
