Abstract

Prior to the 1950s, very few people could afford complete retirement before age 65. Today, some people retire from careers while still in their 40s or early 50s, while others, especially those in professional and technical careers, postpone retirement until they are well into their 70s. In this article, authors Hardy and Hazelrigg examine patterns of economic, political, and social change affecting U.S. employment and pension policies.
