Abstract

In this first of two papers devoted to the detection of chaos in some piecewise-linear systems, viscously damped, under harmonic forcing, some generalities about chaos and about the computation procedure are given. A system with a set-up spring and three unsymmetrically elastic systems are studied. It is shown that all these systems can have subharmonic motions of various orders and they can have chaotic behaviours for certain combinations of parameters.
