Abstract

The industrial and scientific communities have expressed a real need for the capability of actuators and transducers at elevated temperatures. Pb(Zn 1/3Nb 2/3)O 3-PbTiO 3 (PZNT) and Pb(Mg 1/3Nb 2/3)O 3-PbTiO 3 (PMNT) single crystals attracted many attentions in the last two decades because of their ultrahigh piezoelectric and electromechanical properties compared to commercial Pb(Zr xTi 1-x)O 3 (PZT) ceramic, but the applications were limited owing to their low Curie temperature (T c). In this work, attempts to grow high T c piezoelectric single crystals in the Pb(Yb 1/2Nb 1/2)O 3- PbTiO 3 (PYNT) systems were explored. It was found that the zinc dope PYNT single crystals possess similar T c (∼325°C) but much higher rhombohedral to tetragonal phase transition temperature (T r-t) (∼212°C) compared to the barium doped one (∼160°C). The detailed dielectric and piezoelectric properties were reported for zinc doped PYNT single crystals and compared to the barium doped PYNT in this paper.
