Abstract

Description of the theoretical and experimental study of the propagation of Rayleigh waves on surfaces which have depth dependent properties. Theoretical aspects of the problem are discussed and an equation is derived to relate the measurable frequency dependence of the surface wave velocity to the elastic property versus depth contour. Also described is a series of measurements of the surface wave velocity as a function of frequency on a sample of case hardened steel and compares these measurements with the theory. Experiments on a layered medium are outlined and the limitations of the perturbation approach used in this theory is demonstrated.
