Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

Charter is a general term denoting a wide range of medieval legal documents written in both English and Latin. One prominent charter form is the formal Latin document known as the royal diploma, which records a grant of land held in perpetual possession with freedom of alienation. Another charter form is the writ, a short document issued by the king and bearing his seal that instructs local officials, courts, and individuals on various administrative and policy matters.
