Abstract
Female chickens have a single ovary that harbors a hierarchy of ovarian follicles in various stages of development under the influence of pituitary gonadotropins and ovarian hormones. Estrogen stimulates liver to secret precursors of yolk lipoprotein for deposition inside the oocyte. Oocyte enters the oviduct following ovulation and gets fertilized if viable spermatozoa are present. The oocyte is surrounded by successive layers of albumen, shell membrane and shell before expelled through vagina and cloaca by contraction of shell gland smooth muscle. Reproductive disorders include ovarian cancer in egg-type chickens and excessive follicular recruitment in broiler breeder hens.
