Chitin feeds microbial marine fuel cells

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

Researchers at the Pennsylvania State University have constructed a microbial fuel cell that consumes chitin to generate electricity in a marine environment. They constructed an anode made of carbon cloth enclosing chitin. In order to solve the problem of low-nutrient supply for microbial fuel cells, the researchers used chitin, which performed better than the cellulose and the small chitin particles better than the larger ones.
