Abstract

The authors have implanted cam type brushless motor driven ventricular assist pump coupled to a sac type compliance chamber in 8 calves. This sealed system has pumped reliably for over 120 days. The study demonstrated the ability to monitor the system and diagnose soft failures as they develop. All failures have been attributed to machining errors and material or component selection; the motor drive design remains viable, with no technological barriers seen to reliable long-term operation.
