Abstract
Claudius Claudianus is commonly remembered for his activities as a propagandist in the court of Honorius, but earlier in his career he had established a reputation as a celebrated poet. A close reading of the Carmina Minora reveals his familiarity with classical Latin poetry and his identification with historic Roman Republicanism, while suggesting details about his transition from epic poetry to imperial panegyric. As a result, modem readers have a deeper appreciation of his career and literary legacy.
