Abstract
The cloud sensing capabilities of the weather surveillance radar-88 Doppler (WSR-88D) are studied. The theoretical cloud sensing characteristics are calculated and then cloud data are collected and compared with a 94-GHz cloud radar, a radiosonde, and infrared satellite data. The WSR-88D produces accurate measurements of the cloud structure in a vertical column several kilometers from the radar. Furthermore, detailed spatial characteristics of the cloud field, as well as its microphysical structure are obtained with the WSR-88D.
