Abstract
Cognitive radio is a rapidly evolving technology that enables optimization of spectrum utilization via radios that can dynamically adapt their transmission parameters. Research on cognitive radio is of significant importance due to the increasing demand for use of the radio spectrum. This chapter provides an overview of cognitive radio technology, motivation for its development, and key concepts. The chapter also discusses the challenges associated with cognitive radio, such as spectrum sensing, dynamic spectrum access, and interference management and presents some of the recent advances and research efforts in addressing these challenges. Several applications of cognitive radio are presented. The chapter concludes by presenting future research directions and emerging trends in cognitive radio technology.
