Abstract

Employing a cognitive theory used to explain maladaptive and abusive transactions within family systems, this article describes the potential for bias in professionals working with disadvantaged mothers around parenting issues. Societal and professionals' working models of women parenting in poverty are identified and their potential to intrude negatively on therapeutic transactions described. A process of cognitive restructuring for professionals is out-lined, including a set of more adaptive assumptions regarding such women
