Abstract
Colorectal carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in the world. Several screening tools are available that have been endorsed aseffective options for colorectal cancer screening. Each tool has advantagesand disadvantages. For the average-risk adult, there is no clear advantageof one screening option over another. The ideal screening approach forcolorectal cancer is one that the average-risk adult will do as often asnecessary after the age of risk is reached. For adults who are at increasedrisk, the screening approach should be individualized, with an emphasis oncolonoscopy. Emerging technologies may add to our options for colorectalscreening. Data are insufficient to recommend many of these new tests asroutine screening tools because they have not yet been studied in asymptomaticscreening populations.
