Abstract
In 1985 under the auspices of the International Society for Heart Transplantation and the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs, a combined Registry for the clinical use of mechanical ventricular assist devices (VADs) and total artificial hearts (TAHs), was established. The information contained in this report represents the multicenter results of mechanical circulatory support for postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock. Analysis of the data indicated that similar results are obtained regardless of the type of pump used for circulatory support. Furthermore, results are not statistically significant whether a univentricular or biventricular assist device is used. It appears that ventricular recovery and quality of life are satisfactory in long-term hospital survivors, and noncardiac disability is rare.
