N2 - This paper summarizes the types of damage that single-family dwellings experience under different hazard conditions. Available information on the performance of wood-frame, steel stud, structural insulated panel, concrete masonry unit, autoclaved aerated concrete, insulated concrete form, and adobe wall systems in natural disasters and fire is presented to develop an understanding of the damageability of the chosen wall systems. Lessons learned with regard to the vulnerability of damage due to high wind loads resulting from hurricane and tornado as well as missile impact, earthquake induced building deformations, flood water effects, and fire related effects are discussed. At the end, the paper summarizes the appropriateness of different wall systems for single-family dwellings in a simple rating form if the building is expected to experience any of the natural disasters or hazards discussed.
