title = "Comparing the Risk of Sudden Unexpected Infant Death to Common Causes of Childhood Injury Death",
abstract = "In a secondary analysis of publicly available data, the rate of sudden unexplained infant death in the first year exceeded the peak rates of the leading causes of injury death for youth (≤19 years of age). The absolute risk of sudden unexplained infant death exceeded age-specific risks of the major causes of child injury mortality regardless of race or ethnicity.",

note = "Funding Information: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, 17 parents and caregivers can decrease SUID risk by adopting safe infant sleep behaviors. Infants should be placed on their backs, alone, in a crib or bassinet without pillows, stuffed animals, or other soft bedding for every sleep until they reach 1 year of age. The infant should sleep alone in a crib or bassinet in their parent's bedroom for at least the first 6 months. Parents should avoid use of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs during pregnancy and after birth. The Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Case Registry, 18 a robust SUID surveillance system funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, should be expanded to cover the entire US.
