Abstract

This paper compares the application of two direct optimal control methods to an interplanetary solar sail mission (Earth to Venus). The two methods (direct optimization using collocation with nonlinear programming -- DCNLP, and a pseudospectral method using Legendre polynomials) yield similar solutions for the two-dimensional case where Venus' orbital plane is assumed to coincide with Earth's. For the threedimensional case, the required plane change creates problems for DCNLP, but is handled easily by the pseudospectral method.
