Abstract
A comparison of manufacturing techniques, and various laser, optical and thermal properties of ceramic laser gain materials with single crystal materials is presented. It is observed that polycrystalline materials exhibit sharp absorption peaks, high thermal conductivity, high strength and a higher fracture toughness than single crystals. Ceramic laser gain materials are not birefringent, and can therefore be more easily manufactured in a transparent form. The standard single crystal growth process requires temperatures of approximately 2000°C for over 30 days where as ceramic manufacturing process require temperature of approximately 1800°C for less than a day.
