N2 - A four-component surrogate fuel composed of n-dodecane, iso-octane, n-propylbenzene, and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene was formulated to match the hydrogen-to-carbon ratio, derived cetane number, molecular weight, and the threshold soot index (TSI) of JP-8. Two additional surrogate fuels were formulated to match the TSI of JP-8 using narrow-cut solvent fuels obtained from Exxon-Mobil. Experiments were conducted on a wick-fed co-flow laminar diffusion flame to compare the sooting tendencies under laboratory conditions, and on an optically-accessible, model gas turbine combustor to compare the soot concentrations under conditions closer to those found in practical applications. In both tests, soot volume fractions for JP-8 and the surrogates were obtained using laser light extinction. The measurements showed that surrogate fuels had similar soot volume fractions to JP-8 in both the wick flame and the model gas turbine combustor.
