Abstract
The effects of homogeneous drag-reducing polymer solution on a turbulent boundary layer are compared to the effects observed with slot-injected polymer. The comparison includes velocity profile statistics and drag reduction estimates. Vertical velocity fluctuations and Reynolds shear stresses are substantially reduced in both cases but these effects are restricted to y/δ* < 3 for slot-injected polymer. Homogeneous polymer effects are noticeable across the boundary layer. In spite of these differences, modifications to the near wall region of the boundary layer appear similar and estimates of the maximum local fractional drag reductions are near 0.7 in both cases.
