Abstract
Complexity and related concepts are important for understanding life processes as revealed in the new high-throughput data streams. Formal analysis of complexity is less advanced in biology than in certain other fields, including mathematics, physics, and computer science. This article offers an introduction to complexity for biologists, with emphasis on explaining the concepts and results from other fields applicable to understanding living systems at the molecular level. Many of the questions raised are subjects of current research.
