Abstract
Coal-derived jet fuel (JP-8C) from hydrotreated liquids produced from the Great Plains Gasification plant and petroleum-derived jet fuel (JP-8P) were analyzed by combined methods of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Detailed characterizations of individual components of the jet fuels provided a basis for contrasting the overall chemistry of each fuel to provide an evaluation of their thermal stability under conditions of high heat stress to be encountered in jet aircraft of the future. The fuels were also fractionated into fractions of increasing polarity by column chromatographic methods and the resulting fractions were analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Detailed characterization of the fuels is paramount to understanding the behavior of individual compounds under thermal cracking which occurs under heat stress.
