Abstract

Computed Tomography (CT) is the basis of hernia assessment and evaluation. Despite its widespread use and availability, little formal education is provided to the practicing physician during their training regarding its appropriate use, technical limitations, and radiation dose exposure and risks. A fundamental understanding of how CT images are generated, how they are viewed, along with appropriate indications and artifacts will maximize the utility of this modality. In addition, being informed about CT radiation dose allows physicians to have an educated conversation with their patients about the risks and benefits of this modality should the question arise.
