Abstract

A Computer Aided Ultrasonic Flaw Characterization System for weld inspection has been developed. The system is capable of separating planar and volumetric type defects and if required, classifying specific defect categories of particular weld types. An X-butt weld was used as a model for the research work on this development and also for the first applications on this weld test system. In principle, the system combines UT-data (digital position and image analysis) with typical acoustic features and/or characteristics on natural flaws to make a decision of the actual defect type. To enable the decision to be as independent as possible of the subjective influence of an operator and also to verify the first result by means of statistics and probability function analysis, a microcomputer is used. Also, computers can handle the multidimensional parameters and features in the flaw characterization and statistical verification process. The research work presented is based on many years of experience in manual UT-Testing, extensive analytical work on natural flaws and also on many applications of advanced computer technology.
