Abstract

The benefits of matching ventilation system performance to mine environment needs will remain regardless of the nature of the mining system. The problems of achieving this match will also remain. Thus a solution to the problem promises to yield benefits now and in the future. The ability of KBES to utilize 'experience,' to exercise 'judgment,' and to offer non-algorithmic problem solving capability can be used to establish safe and efficient automatic control of the mine ventilation system. The economic aspects of system development, especially of the knowledge base, as well as the cost of hardware, e. g. , control devices, will determine the extent of control which is desired.
